We were approached by Kirklees Council to specify a new PA system for the grade II listed town hall in Huddersfield, West Yokshire.
This large Victorian building is used largely for orchestral, choral and spoken word events and represents a challenge acoustically due to the long reverberation times inherent in the auditorium. The brief was to provide even coverage to all parts of the hall and to achieve maximum intelligibility.
In order to achieve this, the auditorium was measured and plotted using Meyer Sound's MAPP Online prediction software. This allows the coverage and interactions between loudspeakers to be predicted with a high degree of accuracy, enabling decisions regarding the type and quantity to be made with confidence.
The building's listed status meant that speakers could not be fixed directly to the walls or roof, so custom bracketry was manufactured to allow correct placement of individual elements. A further complication was in the venue's use of a stage extension, meaning that the cabinets covering the stalls had to be moveable. The Meyer Sound Galileo system controller was programmed to allow the venue's staff to easily switch between the two positions.
After installation, the SIM-III high resolution analyser was employed to verify the predicted coverage and assist with delay setting. The resulting system is inconspicuous and meets the system brief in all respects.
